What is OTZ?

One-To-Zero, or OTZ Tension Adjustment is a proven, non-surgical method of diagnosing and successfully treating Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS). The OTZ examination is designed to detect specific neurological weaknesses or deficits that must be addressed in order to restore proper function to the shoulder.

Doctors of Chiropractic who use the OTZ treatment, such as Dr. Nissim D.C., follow a unique and complex series of adjustments to the head and upper neck. These treatments must be performed in a specific order, as each adjustment targets a precise location of the spine. Recovery is slightly different for every patient, but there is a common connection between FSS and the spinal accessory nerve, where patients experience immediate improvement after the adjustments are made.

The OTZ Tension Adjustment, combined with Active Release Techniques and specific rehabilitative therapies, is the fastest path to full resolution.

What is the history of OTZ?

The first One To Zero (OTZ) Tension Adjustment was performed by Dr. Francis X. Murphy in the spring of 2007. His patient had shown no signs of a response to any and all previous therapies for her Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS). In fact, she was scheduled for surgical intervention. After detailed research into the multiple theories as to why FSS develops, Dr. Murphy formulated his own hypothesis, and with his patient’s trust, put it to the test.

Immediately following the OTZ Tension adjustment, the patient experienced an 80% reduction in pain and was able to move her previously immobile shoulder, into 180° abduction. This seemingly miraculous occurrence led Dr. Murphy to the discovery of the HMD or Hatcher-Murphy Disorder, named after the patient and doctor that discovered it.

The HMD is theorized to be a subluxation of the atlanto-occipital joint causing tethering and resulting ischemia of the Cranial Nerve XI, which in turn causes dysfunction of the trapezius muscle. The trapezius muscle is fundamental for the complete motion of the shoulder complex.

People potentially in need of this type of adjustment do not have to have the full-blown presentation of FSS but may have varying degrees of shoulder impingement as well as other vague neurological complaints related to compromising the function of this part of the nervous system.

Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS) and OTZ

Frozen Shoulder Syndrome is caused by Ischemia, which is a lack of blood flow to the spinal accessory nerve, which can cause numerous cellular changes and events that cause the trapezius muscle(s) to adhere and become severely hypoxic (lack of oxygen). Because of this condition, thousands of patients have sought out OTZ to help with their condition. Results have shown that their FSS condition was successfully resolved in a relatively short period of time.

One to Zero Tension Adjustment relates to the specific axis at which Dr. Nissim D.C. adjusts the skull. In cases where OTZ adjustments are utilized, there should be an immediate and dramatic improvement in range of motion of the affected shoulder joint. FSS has also recently been linked to other neurological disorders for which OTZ could possibly be a viable and successful treatment. This tremendous success has generated significant interest in the possibilities of using OTZ in the treatment of other neurological conditions.

What are some Frozen Shoulder Syndrome Facts?

The shoulder is the most movable joint in the human body, however it is an unstable joint because of the great range of motion allowed. Instability can increase the likelihood of joint injury. Frozen Shoulder Syndrome rarely appears in people under the age of 40. Those most at risk are people with:

  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Lung Disease
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Heart Disease
  • Those involved in an accident

How do you treat Frozen Shoulder Syndrome with and without OTZ?

Without OTZ, the treatment for FSS involves stretching exercises and occasionally an injection of corticosteroids and numbing drugs into the joint capsule. Surgery may also be required to loosen the joint capsule so that it can move more freely.

With OTZ, the effects are instantaneous, improvements are dramatic and surgery is absolutely unnecessary. As stated above, the One to Zero Tension Adjustment is a complex series of chiropractic adjustments that must be performed in a specific order. This procedure differs for every Frozen Shoulder Syndrome patient, based on a needs assessment performed during the exam.

Does the OTZ Tension Adjustment hurt?

Most patients report a comfortable experience during the procedure; more severe cases may be slightly uncomfortable, but are still well tolerated. How long does it take to complete treatment? There is no simple answer to this question. The majority of patients show positive results after just a few visits, with many reporting an immediate positive reaction. The One to Zero Tension adjustment, when followed by Active Release Techniques and specific rehabilitative therapies, can be the fastest and most cost effective path to full resolution.

Dr. Nissim works with all of his patients to establish a proper treatment plan that ensures that the condition is corrected completely. The initial visit takes approximately thirty (30) minutes. Follow-up visits last up to forty-five minutes. Most treatment plans range from 12-15 visits to ensure complete correction, although individual results may vary.
